The woman's suffrage movement was one primarily run by working-class women. These women were frustrated by their social and economic situation and sought for an outlet through which to initiate change. Suffragettes carried out direct action such as chaining themselves to railings, setting fire to mailbox contents, smashing windows and on occasions setting off bombs. One suffragette, Emily Davison, died after she stepped out in front of the King's horse, Anmer, at the Epsom Derby of 1913. Many of her fellow suffragettes were imprisoned and went on hunger strikes, during which they were restrained and forcibly fed and had reached the height of their campaign by 1912.

What started in the United Kindom came to our shores in 1869 when Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton started National Women's Suffrage Association (NWSA), an organization dedicated to gaining women's suffrage. Anthony was vice-president-at-large of the NWSA from the date of its organization until 1892, when she became president. The Nineteenth Amendment was the culmination of the work of many activists in favor of women's suffrage. It was specifically intended to extend suffrage to women. It was proposed on June 4, 1919 and ratified on August 18, 1920.
